Back To School Tips For Your Child With Special Needs
These five tips can help make the transition into the new school year smoother and more manageable for everyone.

Back-to-school season can feel overwhelming for both parents and students, and families with special needs may face added challenges. These five tips can help make the transition into the new school year smoother and more manageable for everyone.
1. Organize Your Paperwork-
Start the school year by organizing paperwork. Use a binder to keep IEPs, meeting notices, and other documents in date order. Track all communication all calls, emails, meetings and by note all dates and topics. Add a contact sheet at the front with your child’s teachers, therapists, and IEP team for quick reference.
2. Create A Steady Routine-
From morning wake-up to after-school activities, keep the day consistent and organized so your child knows what to expect. Involve them when possible—like choosing their snack or outfit—to build independence and confidence.
3. Familiarize Your Child With The School Environment-
Ease the transition with school visits. New environments can cause anxiety, so schedule a visit to the school before school starts, or try to walk in earlier before everyone arrives. Walk your child through their classroom, meet the teacher, and explore key areas like the cafeteria and restrooms. Photos can also help them visualize and feel more comfortable.
4. Build Strong Communication-
Keep communication open. Connect with the the teacher before school starts to share your child’s needs, strengths, and challenges. Building this partnership helps create a supportive environment from day one.
5. Pack comfort items–
A small, familiar object (like a stress ball, fidget, or photo) can help your child self-soothe during stressful moments.
